Your Google Map Rank Isn’t One Number — It’s Four
You know your Google Maps rank for one search. Your customers type four different things. Some you're winning. Some going to your competitor. Free check inside.

You Google “plumber Alhambra” from your truck. You see yourself in the map pack at #2. Business is fine. You close the phone.
Later that week, three homeowners book jobs with you. You ask each one what they searched to find you. One typed “drain cleaning near me.” One typed “water heater repair.” One typed “emergency plumber.” Nobody typed “plumber Alhambra.”
You didn’t win those calls because of the rank you checked. You won them because you happened to also rank for the three searches you never checked. And for every job that landed, there’s another one that didn’t — a homeowner who typed one of those variants, saw your competitor at #1, and never saw you.
That’s the gap this post is about.
You know one rank, not four
Most home-service owners check Google once, for one query, and stop. Usually the query is the obvious one: their trade + their city. “Plumber Alhambra.” “HVAC Whittier.” “Electrician Pasadena.”
That’s a real number and it’s worth knowing. But it’s not what most of your customers type.
A plumbing customer in Whittier types one of about four things when their pipe is leaking:
- “plumber”
- “drain cleaning”
- “water heater repair”
- “emergency plumber”
They pick the one that fits the specific problem. Google reads each as a different query with different intent and returns a different top 3 for each. You might rank #2 for one and #12 for another — same business, same trade, same city, wildly different rankings.
You’ve checked one of those numbers. You have no idea about the other three.
The variants that book jobs aren't the ones you know
Not every variant matters equally. The specific and urgent ones almost always convert at higher rates than the generic trade term.
Somebody who types “plumber” is early in their process. Maybe browsing. Maybe curious what plumbers are near them. They’ll probably compare two or three profiles before calling anyone.
Somebody who types “emergency plumber” at 9pm has water pouring through their ceiling right now. They’re going to call the first name in the list. If you’re #4, they might scroll to see you. If you’re #7, you’re invisible for this call.
Somebody who types “water heater repair” knows exactly what’s broken and needs someone who does that specific work. They’re picking between the businesses whose profiles specifically list water heater repair — if yours doesn’t, or if Google doesn’t rank you for that phrase, you don’t exist for this job.
The pattern is the same across every home-service trade. Roofing customers type “roof leak repair” when there’s water in the house — that ranks differently from “roofer.” Electrical customers type “panel upgrade” or “EV charger installation” for specific projects — those rank differently from “electrician.” The generic trade term brings in the browsers. The specific and urgent variants bring in the bookings.
Your rank on those is what determines whether the phone rings.

What the tool actually shows
We built the Local Rank Checker to check all four of the keyword variants that matter for your trade at once. Enter your business name. Pick your trade from the dropdown. Pick your city. Hit check.
The tool runs a live Google Maps search for each of the four keyword variants for your trade, from the center of your selected city, and returns:
- A headline stat: “X of 4 key searches where you’re in Google’s top 3” — the fast answer to “am I in the pack?”
- A search-by-search table: each keyword variant with your exact rank (#2, #9, and so on) and a tier badge — Top 3 in green, Top 10 in amber, Top 20 in the default gray, Not in top 20 in red
- A review benchmark: the median review count of the businesses that ARE at the top of those searches — because review volume is the single biggest lever on local rank
It runs in about 30 seconds. Free — one name and email at the gate, then the tool runs and the result appears on the page. That’s the trade: you get the check, we get to know who to follow up with.
How to read what you get back
Three outcomes cover almost every business we run through the tool.
Top 3 on three or four of them. You’re winning. Your GBP has enough prominence — review count, review recency, category configuration — to hold the pack across every variant that matters. Your job is to protect the position and push for the last variant. Usually that means finding the specific signal gap holding back the one keyword.
Top 3 on one or two, Top 10 on the others. This is the most common result and the highest-leverage. You’re already in Google’s top 20 for the variants you’re losing — Google knows you exist for those searches. Getting into the pack takes focused work on the signals that push those specific rankings. Usually reviews, sometimes GBP service listings, sometimes category corrections.
Not in the top 20 for most or all. This is a bigger project. Usually it means low review velocity, thin GBP configuration, weak citation footprint, or all three. Fixable, but the timeline is months, not weeks.
The review number the tool shows you is the target
At the bottom of the result, the tool tells you how many reviews the top-ranking businesses have. For most SGV cities and most trades, that number sits somewhere between 80 and 250. If it says the top-rankers have 129 reviews and you have 40, that’s a concrete number to work toward. If it says 250 and you have 200, you’re closer than you think.
Review volume is the single most observable, most movable lever on local rank. Getting from 40 to 130 by asking every customer for a review, texting a direct Google review link with every invoice, and replying to every review you get — that’s a six-month project with a real ranking change at the end of it.

The patterns we keep seeing in SGV audits
Across the plumbing, HVAC, electrical, and roofing owners we’ve run through this tool in Alhambra, Whittier, Pasadena, Rosemead, and every other city we serve, three patterns show up in almost every result.
The generic-only trap. You rank fine for your trade + city (“plumber Whittier”) but bomb for the specific service names (“drain cleaning,” “water heater repair”). This usually means your GBP is set up for the trade generically but doesn’t list the specific services under GBP’s Services tab, and your website doesn’t have separate pages for each service with schema markup.
The emergency gap. You rank for the trade term but drop out for the “emergency” variant. Almost every owner we audit has this gap. It’s counterintuitive because emergency calls book jobs at a much higher rate than browsing calls, and yet almost no one optimizes for the query. Fixing this is one of the fastest changes we make with new clients.
The service-name blind spot. You rank for “electrician” but not “panel upgrade” or “EV charger installation.” You do that work. Every profile you’re competing with does it too. The ones ranking are the ones whose GBP explicitly lists it as a service, whose website has a dedicated page for it, and whose reviews mention it by name.
Check yours in 30 seconds
Enter your business name, trade, and city into the Local Rank Checker. You’ll get the same result we look at when we audit a new client. Free — name and email at the gate, then the tool runs live and the result appears on the page. No upsell inside the tool.
Two things to look for the moment your result loads:
- The gap between your best and worst rank across the four keywords — that gap is where the fixable revenue lives
- The review count of the top-rankers versus yours — that number tells you exactly how big the gap is
How City Boost helps
We do Local SEO for home-service businesses across the SGV — the audits, the review velocity, the GBP service configuration, and the schema/website work that turns amber-tier keywords into green-tier ones. If your result comes back with strong rank on one search and weak rank on two or three, that’s the exact pattern we work on with new clients every week.
